June 7, 2010 North Myrtle Beach—The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach hosted the second annual Whiskers, Wags & Wine benefit at the Brentwood Restaurant and Wine Bistro. The evening included wine tastings from around the world, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, live music, silent auction and a raffle. All the proceeds benefit The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.

irector of the Humane Society, Michelle LoPintoirector of the Humane Society, Michelle LoPintoDirector of the Humane Society, Michelle LoPinto’s hope was for the event to be a great success.  When asked what the proceeds were going to, she said, “We’re trying to build a new shelter, we have been in the current building since 1985.  We want to move in to a larger building with more state of the art features.”  They currently have 235 cats and kittens and 98 dogs and puppies, which is over capacity for the current building.

The Humane Society hosts around 35 fundraisers a year, and the Whiskers, Wags & Wine is one of there largest.  LoPinto said, “It was a lot easier to plan, and much bigger this year.  We’re going to continue to get bigger and have the event for many years to come.” Their next event will be the Duck Race on September 11, 2010.

Owner Eric Masson was very pleased with the turnout.  This is the second year the event has been hosted at his restaurant.  The first year they only sold 52 tickets, this year the event sold 150 tickets.  He wants the event to continue to be held at The Brentwood Restaurant.

Thousands of visitors, paratroopers, veterans and their families are in the city for the reunion and the events taking place for the reunion.

The Golden Knight started the celebration by parachuting out of planes close above North Myrtle Beach and landing along the beaches off Main Street at 6pm as veterans stood by with American flags and sang the National Anthem.

After the knights landed, Rolling Thunder, a group that combines their love for motorcycles and concerns for MIA and veteran issues, rode down main street to greet their fellow veterans and onlookers.

CB Anderson, Rolling Thunder of Florence, put together a special presentation for military veteran Frank Dunlap. Dunlap was one of the few survivors of the Bataan Death March.  As part of Dunlap’s recognition, Anderson presented Dunlap with a uniform, all of the medals he had received during his time in the service and a 48 star American flag. Dunlap thanked the crowd and commented, “God bless America, and I’m proud to be an American”

Hosts recognized all the WWII veterans and give them a gold sealed proclamation. Out of those few, they recognized Ninety-one year old Sgt. Mike Fitch as one of the few D-Day survivors from Omaha Beach.

Court rules Myrtle Beach helmet law unconstitutional

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - The South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled that Myrtle Beach's law requiring motorcyclists to wear a helmet is unconstitutional.

The lawsuit was filed in April 2009 by 49 people after the city enacted the helmet law in 2008, requiring DOT-approved helmets for all riders in city limits. Under South Carolina law, anyone over the age of 21 is not required to wear a helmet.

The lawsuit argued the law, which required motorcycle riders to wear helmets in the city limits of Myrtle Beach, was unconstitutional because it preempted state law.

"Were local authorities allowed to enforce individual helmet ordinances, riders would need to familiarize themselves with the various ordinances in advance of a trip, so as to ensure compliance," the decision stated. "Riders opting not to wear helmets or eyewear in other areas of the state would be obliged to carry the equipment with them if they intended to pass through a city with a helmet ordinance."

The court added that local authorities might enact ordinances imposing additional and even conflicting equipment requirements, and such laws would unduly limit a citizen's freedom of movement throughout the state.

SAA June Fish Report

By Chris Carbone, Seacoast Anglers Association
JUNE  7, 2010 LITTLE RIVER, SC —The water temperature offshore has been in the 80’s and the offshore boats have been hammering the Dolphin out there! Most reports are that they are filling their coolers.

King Mackerel have moved in from offshore right up to the beaches. Anglers at the Cherry Grove Pier caught six kings in one day, including a 26-pounder.

Most anglers, however, troll with dead bait behind a drone lure or a cigar minnow on a king rig with treble hooks as trailers. Those that have attended Seacoast Anglers seminars this past winter and spring know what they need. There are so many variations that the best thing is to ask the guy at the tackle shop or other anglers what works in the area you are fishing.

Bottom fishing at the ledges has been very good with Grouper and Snapper. Anglers are catching them on a variety of different tackle. Here again, ask Chris Carbone, President SAAChris Carbone, President SAAaround and whatever works for you... go for it!

The water temperature inshore has been between 75-80 degrees depending where you are out there.

Flounder have shown up in numbers. In our area, Cherry Grove has produced the most according to the reports I have been getting. Dropping tide is preferred for most of the anglers. Some say to use #40 braid line and a 18” fluorocarbon leader. Put an egg sinker on the braid (enough to hold the bottom) and a #2 Kayle hook. Gulp bait on the hook (almost any kind) and cast and retrieve slowly. Other say to use 10-12lb. mono on a Carolina rig with a sinker ahead of a 18” fluorocarbon leader and tie on a #4 wide bend Eagle Claw hook. Bait it with a live minnow or if not available, try the Gulp bait here as well.

Look for flounder in Dunn Sound, The ICW at Little River Waterfront, Sunset Beach Bridge, and Tubbs Inlet to name a few spots to try. Try drifting the LR Jetties as well.

As I have said before, Sheepshead are at the Jim Caudle Reef and have moved to the piers as well.

Investigation continues after golf cart theft arrest

By Brandon Herring, WMBF News

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - North Myrtle Beach Police arrested two men Saturday after an officer says he saw the men steal a golf cart. Now investigators are trying to figure out if the men are responsible for other golf cart thefts.

Several people around North Myrtle Beach say they have recently heard more stories about stolen golf carts.

"It gets my attention because I know that's becoming more and more prevalent," golf cart owner Ken Swicegood said.

Swicegood has golf cart with a few upgrades. So when he hears about a string of thefts he takes notice, and other golf cart owners in North Myrtle Beach have done the same.

"It kinda makes you want to take a little more precaution about how you leave it and where you leave it," Vinnon Williams, whose neighbor just had her cart stolen in the last few weeks said. "[You can] buy an ugly one like we got and you won't have to worry about it. Even though ours is not pretty, it's functional, and we really don't want to lose it."

80-year-old sentenced for murder for hire plot

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC - An 80-year-old West Virginia man has been sentenced to 10 years suspended sentence for solicitation to commit murder.

Rudolph Westley Beale, of Lewisburg, WV, will serve three years in jail and five years probation. Beale tried to pay $5,000 to have someone murdered in June 2009. As part of the sentencing, Beale is not allowed to live in Horry County and must undergo mental rehabilitation.

An informant told North Myrtle Beach Police that Beale had expressed a desire to have a person murdered between June 22 and June 25, 2009. Police recorded conversations in which Beale agreed to pay $5,000 for the informant and a third person to commit the murder. Beale also agreed to pay the informant half of the money in advance.

Detectives executed a search warrant on June 25 and seized $3,000 in cash along with six photos of the target. Investigators also said Beale left the key to his house under the informant's door mat for the informant to go into the home and get the cash and photos.

The Average Joe reviews Legends/Heathland

By Joe Derus-NorthMrytleBeachonline.com
MAY 30, 2010 MYRTLE BEACH, SC —The Legends complex of three golf courses are located just off route 501 near the Tanger outlets.

Heathland, the course being review, is part of the Legends Group of courses of Moorland, and Parkland located at this facility. Two other courses, Oyster Bay (read Joe's review)  and Heritage, are located at separate facilities in Sunset Beach, NC and Pawley’s Island, SC, respectively.

lead13974Rated "Top 10 New Resort Courses in the World" by GOLF Magazine in 1990, Myrtle Beach Golf Directors selected the Heathland course and could not have made a better choice. Legends managers strive for a look that the staff perfectly groom the courses every day.  Heathland is in such pristine condition the fairways look like artificial turf.  As we played, we found the large greens run true with consistent speed on all.

Everything we saw about the course, beginning with friendly golf staff and extending to the waitstaff in the clubhouse, met very high standards. Why is waitstaff important to golfers? because you’ll  get a full buffet breakfast and lunch and two “drinks” with your green fees. Getting an early morning tee time leaves time enough for breakfast, golf and lunch afterwards. The quality of the food is so good and the service so friendly you won’t mind taking on the really challenging Heathland course. A casual golfer may just decide to chill out after a tough round.

Heathland is a return to traditional Scottish golf - the style of links with little or no trees, but, instead, high, rolling moguls and strategically placed bunkers and vegetation. In keeping with Scottish tradition, Heathland does not have hole numbers or yardage markers on the course. The golfer must use the yardage book provided on each cart to get hole distance to the hole and playing strategy. This is invaluable Information. Keep a tight hold of your book.  It took our group a couple of holes to figure this out. This book describes how best to play this course, no if and or buts.

Heathland insists upon keeping your ball in the fairway.  A long drive with the ball just slightly off fairway puts you behind vegetation and makes your second shot critical.

I will give you my take on the difficult par four number 16. Since it is close to Memorial Day and not too far away from the anniversary of the invasion at Normandy on June 6th 1944, I thought describing playing that hole in terms used for the invasion would be appropriate.

For this to make sense you have to understand Allied Command divided the Normandy coastline into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

From and elevated tee box you look down on a canal that runs right through the fairway. This canal (like the English Channel) had to be crossed.  Our group began its Normandy invasion of number 16.

Possibility of most active hurricane season on record

By Jim Hulen, North Myrtle Beach Online.com
MAY 28, 2010 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Yesterday, the National Hurricane center released their forecast for the 2010 hurricane season which begins Tuesday, essentially agreeing with both Colorado State’s William Gray’s and AccuWeather’s Joe Bastardi’s prediction for a very active season.

NOAA estimates an 85% chance of an above normal season. The outlook indicates only a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a hazelHousebelow-normal season. NOAA forecasts 14-23 named storms, 8-14 hurricanes and 3-7 major hurricanes.

Colorado State calls for 15 named storms and 8 hurricanes, both at the low range of NOAA’s estimate. However, Colorado State forecasts 10 major hurricanes, more than NOAA.

Bastardi's forecast falls more in line with NOAA by calling for 16 -18 hurricanes.

While NOAA declines to forecast hurricane landfalls, Colorado estimates the probability of at least one major hurricane hitting some where on the U.S. coastline as 69% - up from the last century average of 52%.  For the East coast, including Florida, Colorado State ups the probabilities to 45% from the last century average of 31%.

In the last 60 years, twenty-two hurricanes have come within 125 miles of North Myrtle Beach.  Only Hazel in 1954 and Charlie in 2004 centered on the community. Hazel was a category four and Charlie a one.
