Lazarus withdraws candidacy

By Jim Hulen, North Myrtle Beach Online.com
MARCH 9, 2010 MYRTLE BEACH, SC —  Mark Lazarus, who announced his bid for the Horry County Chairman seat on January 9 , announced today that he has reconsidered the impact it would have on his family and business if he ran.

Lazarus, owner of Wild Water and Wheels located near Surfside, has a diverse career of involvement in the Grand Strand.  He served as the Chairman of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce in 2001 and, from 2002 to 2006, he was on the Horry County Council rising to vice chair in 2006.  He and his family have owned and managed businesses throughout the Strand for generations.

“Finishing the RIDE II program and obtaining $42 million for the Myrtle Beach International Airport,” were some of the important issues Lazarus said characterized his term on the council.  In addition, Lazarus commented, “I have a strong interest in how development was impacting Horry County.”

Lazarus led many changes in policies and ordinances that shaped development issues on the long term. Lazarus served on Horry County Council during the period of time when the County was facing the initial steps that would eventually lead to the rapid economic expansion in the last decade.

Lazarus released the following statement:
“Let me start by thanking each of you for your support and thoughts.

It is with deep regret that I will not seek a bid for the upcoming county council chairman seat! My family and I have thought and prayed over this decision since i preliminarily announced my intention to run.

Having two children still at home, with one graduating high school in May and one in college, along with the many business obligations that i have,we have decided that the timing is not right for me and my focus at this time will be better served on my family and business interest.

I want to thank all of my early supporters and apologize for letting you down. This decision wasnt made lightly and in the end i feel it is best for me and my family. I intend to stay involved and hopefully will return to the political scene in the near future when the timing is right.

I wish all the candidates good luchk on their campaigns. We need new leadershipwith ana new focus. Times are tough and it will take someone with vision and dediction to lead this county. Most of all we need a leader that can form relationships with all municipalities and council members. It is a big job and one not to be taken lightly!

Thank you and I hope for your support in the future!”

Edwards, born with an eye condition called cone dystrophy, is legally blind but that has not kept her from being actively involved in her community. City Public Information Officer corrects confusion

By Jim Hulen, North Myrtle Beach Online.com

MARCH 6, 2010 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC - North Myrtle Beach Public Information Officer, Nicole Aiello released information concerning the City's role in a recent proposal for a bike venue near Main Street. Aiello stressed that the City was not a participant. Her information can be read in its entirety at the end of this article.

North Myrtle Beach residents have expressed concerns about bike rallies because of their size.

During past years, as many as 300,000 visitors come during the two week May Harley Rally.  After years of complaints from locals about the noise, traffic, reckless driving and lewd behavior during the rallies, Myrtle Beach enacting new ‘bike’ ordinances last year, driving the traffic way down.  Some estimates were as low as 150,000 participants.

The City of North Myrtle Beach took the position that they have sufficient ordinances to handle bike rallies.

This year as last year, local venues will have to compete with the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealer’s Association’s decision to move their rally from the Myrtle Beach Area to New Bern, North Carolina. The New Bern rally will be held May 14th and 15th.  The Local Myrtle Harley Davidson Spring Rally will continue to sponsor a rally from May 7th through May 16th.

Businessmen Harold Worley and Mark Lazarus propose adding a new venue within the City of NMark_Lazarusorth Myrtle Beach to attract some portion of the attendance. Worley will lease property adjacent to the Main Street ‘Horseshoe’ to Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson dealership and will be an active rally venue for only five days, May 11th through May 16th.

Their hope is that they can attract at least 10,000 people to come thru the venue over the five day period. “Big events attract big attendance,” Lazarus said. Lazarus emphasized that this venue will be a retail outlet with no additional vendors, no music and no entertainment. “The location will rent bikes but close down that part of their operation by 5pm.”

Nicole Aiello posted this information on the North Myrtle Beach Facebook site: There was some confusion created today by The Sun news article regarding a bike rally in NMB. Let me try to clear a few things up - the City itself is not sponsoring a bike rally or bike events.

The possibility exists, however, through the City’s current ordinances, that Harley Davidson Corporation will request a business license through the City and set up a business near the horseshoe. This is just a possibility and Harley Davidson Corporation has not applied for a business license at this time.

SLED responds to North Myrtle Beach request

By Jim Hulen, North Myrtle Beach Online
MARCH 5, 2010 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC — In January, North Myrtle Beach City Manager, John Smithson asked the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to look into allegations that former Public Safety Director William Bailey had hindered a criminal domestic violence investigation.

The police officer in the case could not determine which party was at fault and requested warrants for both, but the warrants were never filed according to media reports.

SLED investigators came to the Public Safety Department to conduct a preliminary investigation on the matter resulting from former Public Safety Officers allegations that Bailey was inappropriately involved in the case.

“That SLED is conducting a preliminary investigation is no assurance that a formal investigation will follow,” said Nicole Aiello, Public Information Officer for the City of North Myrtle Beach.

When contacted, Bailey said, “I welcome SLED finally coming in.  I know they will clear my good name.”
