October 15, 2012 North Myrtle Beach, SC During the council meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley issued a proclamation recognizing October 21‐27 as General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Advocates for Children Week in North Myrtle Beach. According to the GFWC, members have played an intricate role in advocating for the health and well‐being of children since the early 1900s, with prominent club women such as Jane Addams and Julia Lathrop paving the way for improved child labor and juvenile court laws.
The North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club works to honor unity in diversity, supporting Tools for Schools, the Children’s Recovery Center, the Autism Foundation, the USO United through Reading Program, and many other programs.
City employees Debra Brown and Sean Hoelscher were named as Employees of the Month for September. Debra, an Administrative Assistant II, was nominated for her outstanding performance while filling in for a Purchasing Division employee who was out on an extended medical leave of absence.
Sean, a Planner, was nominated for his assistance and creative skills in designing the City’s new ceremonial coin, which will be given out on special occasions by the Mayor and City Council. The colors on the back of the coin mirror those used on wayfaring signs in the four different sections of the city. The colors help visitors identify which section of the city they are in. Many cities now use ceremonial coins as gifts to visiting dignitaries and to mark other occasions that would not qualify for a presentation of the ceremonial keys to the city.
