September 1, 2012 North Myrtle Beach, SC – NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com –Ziplines are the newest and hottest thing - where rides are propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the bottom of an inclined cable by attaching to a freely moving pulley. Early this year the City released a request for interested parties to make a proposal for how they would design and operate one for the city. City officials are keeping mum on the details of a possible zipline amusement and rightfully so. The proposed privately funded zipline amusement, to be incorporated within the 150 plus acre Sports Complex, is under negations with a potential provider – Adrenaline Adventures – so details are not available.
Adrenaline Adventures operates the Myrtle Beach Zipline Adventures located on the site of the former Myrtle Beach Pavilion. This location zips riders between two tower standing 600 feet apart. Their web site says riders travel at speeds of up to 40 MPH and includes 6 side-by-side racing ziplines.
The Myrtle Beach ziplines operate in an open field, while the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex zipline would extend 4,500 feet and maneuver among trees, over natural Carolina Bays and a 27 acre lake. In addition to the natural scenery, riders would have views of the proposed 5 to 7 acre Water Park, the future amphitheater and the Baseball/Softball complex.
City Manager, Mike Mahaney said, “The zip line will be required to open in February, 2014 when the entire Sports Complex will be opened to the public. ” In nearby Hilton Head is a zip line amusement - Zipline Hilton- that might provide some similarities to the one that may eventually come to the North Myrtle Beach Complex. They describe it as a two hour canopy tour through “Hilton Head’s beautiful massive live oaks and commanding pines, looking out on glistening Broad Creek with its array of boats, fantastic birds and dolphins.” View the video to get some sense of Zipline Hilton Head’s offering.
