August 19, 2012 North Myrtle Beach, SC – The North Myrtle Beach Triathlon will be held Saturday, September 8, beginning at 7:00 a.m., and volunteers are needed to help in all areas. Volunteers are needed on the water in kayaks or canoes assisting open water swimmers, directing traffic on the bike and run course, in the transition area, and at the water station. Persons interested in volunteering may contact Melinda Chappell or Diane Bartlett at (843) 281-3737.
The North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center directed event includes a 700 yard open water swim, a 13 mile bike leg, and a 5K run.
The land course includes over six miles along Ocean Boulevard, the marsh in Cherry Grove, and a section of historic Ocean Drive, the "Home of Beach Music.”
Depending on the current, the open water swim will start 700 yards north or south of the Main Street Horseshoe. Swimmers walk down the beach, north or south, and enter the water. Swimmers exit at the Horseshoe, which also serves as the triathlon the transition area.
The North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center’s North Myrtle Beach Triathlon benefits the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS) Foundation. Sudden arrhythmia death syndromes are genetic heart conditions that can cause sudden death in young, apparently healthy people. However, if discovered and addressed in time, these conditions can be treated and deaths can be prevented.
