June 29, 2012 North Myrtle Beach, SC - Words you don’t want to read on NOAA’s web site for this area “dangerous heat to affect southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia through the weekend. Near record heat combined with moderate levels of humidity will result in dangerous heat indices developing across much of the area through the weekend. This is a potentially dangerous and long-duration heat wave.”
NOAA Graphic for 6/29/1012But everything is relative. Is North Myrtle Beach having a heat wave when a visitor vacationing from Charlotte is leaving 104 degree temperatures to a cool 88 degrees at North Myrtle Beach – from Richmond 103 degrees and DC 101 degrees? It seems to us that when North Myrtle Beach temperatures retain a 5 to 7 degree favorable advantage through the Fourth of July, it's a 'cool wave' for visitors. And remember, the ocean temperature will be a real cool 81 degrees!
Visitors going to the beach just need to make sure to have shade (tents or umbrellas), stay as wet as possible, and make frequent dips in the 81 degree ocean. If you plan to shop, Barefoot Landing is a good choice. Take along bottled water and during the day, decrease the heat by walking through the mist in the ‘cool zone’ and at night enjoy fireworks and street entertainers.
If you want out of the heat there are plenty of things to do indoors. Our ‘rainy day’ guide offers some suggestions – stay fit at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatics Center, visit an Arcade, go bowling, see a movie, go shopping or see a show.
At night, take the kids to the best (and only) ocean side family entertainment – the O.D. Pavilion Amusement Park. Visit their web site for coupons.
