Activities heat up as S.C. Senior Open and Charity Pro/AM tournament dates near

By Jim Hulen, North Myrtle Beach Online.com

AUGUST 16, NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Each year for the past five years, the Tidewater Tournament Lauren HuntCharity Committee has held several events around labor day to raise money for local non-profit organizations. For the past three years, it has selected the North Strand Helping Hand and the Autism Advocacy Foundations as its recipients.

Tournament Director, Bill Pearson said, “We are on track to meet our goals.” For the past few years the tournament and surrounding activities have raised $30 to $35 thousand for charity.

The majority of the money raised comes from “GOLF FEST”- a full day of activities on Sunday, September 6th from noon to 4pm during which attendees have the opportunity to attend free golf clinics conducted by top area professional, witness trick shop and long drive demonstrations and participate in contests and drawings.

In its fifth year of operation Pearson announced the first ever all female team to play in the September 7th Pro/Am. “I am excited to see a very competitive team of ladies enter the Pro/Am. We extended a special invitation to Lauren Hunt, who will debut her Pro Career at our event and lead her team,” said Pearson.

Budding professional golfer Lauren Hunt has compiled. . . .

The Average Joe reviews the Glen Dornoch Golf Course

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

JULY 27 Little River, SC July -- The Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links is located just entryoff Route 17 not too far north of the Little River Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway bridge and South of the NC/SC border.

Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links Contrary to the elegant Gaelic-sounding name of Glen Dornoch the course staff is easy going and quite friendly - reflecting the traditional highland hospitality of the course from which it derives its name. The Dornoch name is from a Royal club formed in 1877 located in Sutherland, Scotland.

As you walk up you can hear in your mind’s ear “Ceud mile failte!” That's Gaelic for "A Hundred Thousand Welcomes!" In fact the only better greeting would have been handed some “Scottish Brew” as a summer quencher. The staff is quite proud of their course and rightly so.

When Myrtle Beach Golf Directors arranged our tee times to play Glen Dornoch, to say the least, I was quite excited. I had heard this course is something special, quite beautiful and difficult to play. I am happy to say it exceeded all my expectations, including the difficulty. Bring a few extra balls, lots of patients and sound judgment when playing this course.

Amid surroundings of old live oaks, pines, and magnolias, I asked our foursome to give me three words to describe this course. Beautiful, well-maintained . . .

The Average Joe reviews Wild Wing Plantation

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

JULY 15, 2009 CONWAY, SC — Wild Wing Plantation offers all the discriminating golfer is looking for, smooth greens, lush fairways and a very interesting challenging layout.

The Avocet course, designed by Larry Nelson and Jeff Bauer, has been a must play at Myrtle Beach for over 15 years. At one time Wild Wing had four courses, Wood Stork that opened in 1991, Hummingbird in 1992, Avocet in 1993 and Falcon in 1994 Through the years the course have won many Awards including “4-Star Award Winner” Golf Digest, Places to Play 2002-2003.

Avocet, however, was always THE course to play at Wild Wing, and has emerged as the survivor of the original four courses. Recently renovated is Hummingbird Nine. We have not played this as yet, but from what we hear it is up to Avocet/Wild Wing quality.

Wild Wing is located just off Highway 501 North near Conway. If you are coming from the North Myrtle Beach area scoot South on Highway 31 to 501 North and enter Wild Wing on your right. I only say this because there is no traffic light to the entrance and crossing making a left from 501 may be problem. To avoid problems schedule your tee time through myrtlebeachgolfdirectors.com get a good deal and excellent directions as well.

The Average Joe reviews the Dye Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

JUNE 29, NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC —Dye Course at Barefoot Resort A few days ago the Average Joe foursome played the Dye Club at Barefoot Resort. For those of you who aren’t familiar with North Myrtle Beach and “Barefoot” just find route 17 and head towards Barefoot Landing, The House of Blues, The Alabama Theater, Greg Normans’ Restaurant or any of the other attractions in the area that are familiar.

Look for the bridge over the inland waterway and, like the old song by Patti Page, “Cross over the Bridge.” Less then a quarter of a mile after the bridge, a sign on the right will point to The Dye Course.

The guard at the gate house will let visitors pass provided they have tee times. Do as the Average Joe Golf Group and arrange your tee time through Myrtle Beach Golf Directors. They will get you the best tee times, and best prices.

The Average Joe reviews Oyster Bay Golf Links

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

JUNE 5, 2009 CALABASH, NC -- Just a bit north from the North Myrtle Beach area is the home of Oyster Bay Oyster Bay Golf Links. The course is easy to find but requires just a bit of OB_Signmaneuvering getting through the Calabash area. Just do as we did - call Myrtle Beach Golf Directors for tee times and easy to follow directions to the course.

Subtle indications will let know the driver he is close to the course. Only one course I know has roughs and tee areas loaded with oyster shells. These shells give away the course entrance is near, give the course its unique look and yet the shells do not interfere with play.

Oyster Bay Golf Links was created by Legends developer Larry Young and architect Dan Maples several years before the late 80’s Grand Strand course building boom. Since Oyster Bay opened in 1983, it has been a local favorite for much of that time. Oyster Bay Golf Links’ large clubhouse offers a full bar and grill, plus a pro shop with plenty of shopping options. The visitor can warm up on a generous driving range and a Bermuda putting green.

The Average Joe reviews The Pearl Golf Links East

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

APRIL 28, 2009 MYRTLE BEACH, SC—his is the second of a two part review on the Pearl. Part one was on the Pearl West course and this review is on the East Course.

Our tee times for this course was arranged by Myrtle Beach Golf Directors. They always seem to get us off at or near the time we request. Like the West course the Pearls East course is in overall good shape. The Pine Lakes Country Clubfairways are lush and the ball sits up well. The roughs are a bit dry and not yet grown enough to be considered real roughs. Right now this helps the higher handicap golfer because the roughs do not eat the ball. Come summer it will be a different story.

The undeveloped home sites at the Pearl East are not as visible for the most part. This is a difference between the two courses.

East starts off with a 506 par 5 good warm up hole. Hitting the middle of fairways is important on this hole because trees lining the fairway are close.

Hole number two is a 171 yard par three. Rather long par threes are the norm on this course. 185, 152 and 155 yards are the distances on the other threes.

The Average Joe reviews The Pearl Golf Links West Course

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Pine Lakes Country ClubAPRIL 28, 2009 MYRTLE BEACH, SC—With tee times arranged by Myrtle Beach Golf Directors we traveled just a few minutes north on route 17 from North Myrtle Beach into North Carolina on route 179 that runs straight through Calabash to The Pearl Golf Links. The Pearl has two 18 hole courses - East and West. Today we played the West with the review of the East course to come soon.

The Pearl is one of the mature courses that had plans to develop home sites all around the course. Unfortunately, due to the down turn in the housing market those plans appear to be on hold.

Fortunately this has not affected the courses themselves.

The Average Joe reviews Pine Lakes Golf and Country Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

APRIL 28, 2009 MYRTLE BEACH, SC—With tee times arranged by Myrtle Beach Golf Directors we recently visited the newly revised Pine Lakes Golf club. Pine lakes opened in 1927 just a half mile from the ocean. It is located in the heart of Myrtle Pine Lakes Country ClubBeach on Granddaddy Drive and is now only accessible off of Grissom Parkway. Visitors can no longer get to the course off route 17 business. However the entrance off Grissom Parkway is clearly marked by large easily readable signs.

Construction of the new entrance is nearly complete and will probably be completed by the time this is published. Please drive carefully when heading South from the North Myrtle Beach area on US 31 to Grissom Parkway as the speed limit changes quickly from 60-65 to 45 in just a couple hundred yards There is no need to start your rounds with a speeding ticket.

Those that have previously played this course also know it as “The Granddaddy.” The entrance is onto Granddaddy Drive off Grissom Parkway. The drive up to the clubhouse is quite picturesque and the bag drop is most convenient. Note: check in at the pro shop not the club house. That is for members only. For info on membership contact the course.

A Golf Course Review of Woodland Valley Country Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Average JoeLoris, SC May 28, 2008--A few miles west on route 9 from US 17 is Woodland Valley Country Club. Old timers and frequent players will remember the course being called Diamond Back. Its entrance was noted by a fearsome rattle snake on the billboard that denoted the entrance. That billboard is gone now and replaced with a very classy sign.

Our arrangements to play Woodland Valley were through courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors.

Average Joe reviews (actually previews) Palmetto Green Golf Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

North Myrtle Beach, SC April 15, 2008--Longs, SC May 1, 2008--Just a short drive from route 17 in North Myrtle Beach on route 9 heading west you’ll come to Colonial Charters development and the entrance to Palmetto Greens Golf & Country Club. Its official address is 301 Charter Drive Longs SC (843-399-4653).

Our arrangements to play Palmetto Greens were through courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors.

Palmetto Greens is a brand spanking new course in the North Myrtle Beach area. It opened to the public on April 14th.

Well…it’s not quite “spanking new” – it is a redesign of the Colonial Charters Golf Course. While not complete just yet, its potential is off the charts. The people at Palmetto Green told us they are aware that fine tuning still needs to be done, and they have very definite plans to upgrade this course to a premium one.

The Average Joe Reviews the Tigers Eye Golf Course

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Tigers_EyeOcean Isle Beach, NC March 28, 2008—The Average Joe foursome played Tigers Eye at Ocean Ridge Plantation last week.

Tigers Eye is part of the Big Cats courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation. Tigers Eye is easy to get to from North Myrtle Beach. It is just nine miles north of the South Carolina border on route 17. Though not the newest of the Big Cat courses it is one of their best.

Myrtle Beach Golf Directors, who scheduled tee time for us, said “Joe you will love this course.” I soon discovered what they meant.

After checking in at club house and looking out the course you get to know what a beautiful golf course looks like. I’ll say right now the beauty you see from the club house is repeated throughout the entire course. It is a little early in the year for trees, grasses, and flowers to be in full bloom; nevertheless, outstanding scenery abounds.

The Average Joe Reviews Heather Glen Golf Course

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Heather_Glen_ClubhouseLittle River SC March 6 2008-- Our original tee time was scheduled by Myrtle Beach Golf Directors and the understanding people at Heather Glen allowed us to re-schedule a couple of times due to bad weather.

When our foursome finally got to play this 27 hole award winning golf course, the weather was still iffy. But, despite that, we headed north on Hwy 17, crossed over the Intracoastal Waterway bridge, continued through the historic Little River fishing village and found Heather Glen is on the left - just a bit north of the Little River community and just on the south side of the North Carolina/South Carolina state line.

The Average Joe's Golf Course Review of Arrowhead Golf Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Arrowhead Golf Course Myrtle Beach, SC December --Thru the courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors I, again, had the pleasure of playing Arrowhead Golf Club. Let me say right off, this 27 hole beauty is one of my favorite courses.

Arrowhead features Bermuda Fairways and Bent Grass Greens and was designed by Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson. Lots of water is on the course and Waterway #5 parallels the Intracoastal Water – a very scenic view.

The Average Joe's Golf Course Review of Bald Head Island Golf Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Bald Head Island Golf Course Southport, NC November 25, 2007--The other day this average Joe golfer went to Southport, NC to play Bald Head Island Golf Club, through the courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors.

If you are not familiar with this course and are looking for a different kind of golfing experience you should give Bald Head Island Club a shot.

The course is on North Carolina's southernmost cape island.

First of all, plan on full day as you have a 20 mile ride north on 17 from North Myrtle Beach to NC 211 and another 20 miles to Southport NC.

You also will not be able to show up five minutes before tee time.

Why? Because the bag drop and passenger ferry landing is at Indigo Plantation and Marina where you need to board a boat to the island.

The Average Joe's Golf Course Review of Meadowlands Golf Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

MeadowlandsCalabash, N.C October 25, 2007--Well it has been a while since The Average Joe has written a review of a local golf course.

Like most guys I had a break down of the body and had to sit it out for a while. However, the good guys at Myrtle Beach Golf Directors who arrange my tee times have been most patient with me and said just get well and come back soon. A couple of weeks and I should be back in full swing.

[Editor's note - yay! He's back!!!]

Meadowlands, by the way, is tucked neatly in the Calabash area of NC. Head North on US 17 out of North Myrtle Beach to route 179 in North Carolina, hang a left and follow the signs to Meadowlands.

I've played Meadowlands numerous times so this review is easy to do.

Meadowlands as its name implies is a wide open course for the most part. The number one hole is a par four of 379 yards from the white tees looks invitingly easy; just hit it down the middle. Get off to a good start, because the front nine plays a lot tougher then the back on this course.

Meadowlands has a couple of "unique" holes that challenge your mind as well as your...

Average Joe Plays in Pro-Am at Tidewater Golf

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Tidewater Charity GolfNorth Myrtle Beach, September 3, 2007--No, I didn't want to do it, but my editor asked me to help out and report on how an average golfer handles the "pressures of playing with a pro and in a big time tournament."

The price to enter was a little steep, $225, but was going to two good causes - The North Strand Helping Hand and the Horry County Autism Advocacy Foundation. Plus you got a lot of goodies - a $20 Martin's Gift Card, a $45 Nike Golf Shirt and an Awards Luncheon of steak and lobster catered by Outback Steak House.

Thanks to NorthMyrtleBeachOnLine.com for taking off most of the pressure by sponsoring me in the tourney. It is truly appreciated.

Of course the "pressures" is said tongue in cheek. Sure there was a bit of anxiety on how I would play. I knew I could not compete with a pro but I did not want to embarrass myself either. My hope was to contribute something to the "team.".

The Average Joe's Review of Shaftsbury Glen Golf Course

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

ShaftsburyOcean Ridge, NC August 6, 2007  West Myrtle Beach SC August 20th 2007--When we spoke to North Myrtle Beach Golf Directors about which course we wanted to review, my request was "Find us one with some shade!"

The last few weeks, the Average Joes have been playing some great courses but they have been links style, no trees, plenty of sand and SUN. The hot weather and sun had just about burned us out so we looked forward to trees and some shade. The Myrtle Beach Golf Directors did a great job of finding Shaftsbury Glen for us.

From the North Myrtle Beach area, Shaftsbury Glen is just a 30 minute drive or so to SC route 905, two miles west (towards Conway) from the Conway bypass.

Our group today consisted of three locals, who shot consistently in the low to high 90s and a low 80s import from the Philadelphia area. Later on in this article, the out-of-towner will compare his home area to ours.

The Average Joe's Review of Leopard's Chase

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Average JoeOcean Ridge, NC August 6, 2007--Good news! Thanks to Myrtle Beach Golf Directors, who have been providing the golf rounds, the Hackers have been promoted.

Thanks to them, the group of us has had the privilege of playing and writing about some of the areas more challenging courses. Our skill level has improved so much our editor decided we should be elevated from hacker to 'Average Joe golfers'. So now the reviews will be "The Average Joe's Reviews of area golf courses."

This week, we headed North on route17 for nine miles from the SC border to Ocean Ridge Plantation to play their brand new course Leopards Chase.

The Hackers review the Thistle Golf Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

From North Myrtle Beach, take 17 N to Calabash NC route 179. Thistle is located just a couple of miles East of Calabash.

When you get to the entrance be sure to have your tee time made as a friendly gate guard will ask you for name and tee times.

The course is designed to present a distinct Scottish links feel, with wind-swept fairways, large bentgrass greens and surrounding hillsides covered in heather and wild flowers.

A Golf Course review of the Jones Course at Sea Trail Golf - Sunset Beach NC

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Sea Trail Golf CourseSunset Beach, NC July 24, 2007--The first decision the Hackers had to make is which of the three course at Sea Trail to play - the Jones, Maples, or Byrd courses. Through the courtesy of Myrtle Beach Golf Directors, the Hackers had the opportunity to play and review The Jones Course at Sea Trail.

The second decision the Hackers' had to make is which route to take from the North Myrtle Beach area.

I suggest you make is easy on the driver.

Head North on route 17 towards Calabash, NC and look for Route 179. It is just a short drive from the SC/NC border. Turn right on to 179 through Calabash for about four miles and the Sea Trail entrance is on the right. Just follow the signs to the impressive club house and conference center.

A golf course review of Aberdeen Country Club

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

March 07, 2006 --This week our group played Aberdeen Country Club, just a short drive west from North Myrtle Beach via highway 17 to route 9.

Getting there is just a bit unusual as you will pass the course on your right, see the sign, and think you are there. You’ll need to go a bit farther west on route nine, find the second sign to enter through a residential area.

It’s prime golf time in the North Myrtle Beach area!

Sunbelt Tour prepares for “Foreign Invasion”

By Jim Hulen, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Why are so many Europeans heading to Georgia and the Sunbelt Senior Tour?

The first event on the European Senior Tour will be the Barbados Open on February 28 - March 2. They will not have their second event until May 11-13 at the Turkish Seniors Open. That leaves a huge void from early March to late May.

Don Barnes, Sunbelt Senior Tour Director, said, “David Russell, from Dunbar, Scotland, has entered the "Golden Isles Senior Classic" at Sanctuary Cove, Waverly, GA on March 14-16 and the Lowcountry Senior Open at Laurel Island Links in Kingsland, GA on March 19-21. Russell has finished 8th on the European Senior Tour's Order of Merit for both of the last two years. He has won over $1 million since joining that tour.”

Golf Course Review on Eagle Nest, Little River, South Carolina - January 2007

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

The guys I play with have visited Eagle Nest many times to play this challenging and interesting course over the past couple of years. Eagle Nest is located just a short way north on route 17 over the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway bridge from North Myrtle Beach toward Wilmington NC.

Eagle Nest’s sign on route 17 reads “play the three toughest finishing holes on the strand.” Not what I normally look forward to, but I always feel great when I par two of the three.

Golf Course Review on River Hills, Little River, South Carolina - September 2006

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

September 19, 2006 - Recently we played River Hills Golf and Country Club in Little River, just a short drive North on route 17 over the inland waterway bridge to the entrance, next to River Hills Medical Center. The attractive sign bespeaks the quality of the course.

River Hills is situated in a very picturesque residential area, and the drive to the clubhouse from route 17 is quite a way, so enjoy the scenery as you approach the course.

I thought River Hills was a private or semi-private course simply because we, as a group have not played it before. Two thoughts come to mind. It has the look of a private club, in that it is well kept.

Golf Course Review on Black Bear Golf Club, Longs, South Carolina - June 2006

By Joe Derus, NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com

Last Wednesday the Hackers played Black Bear Golf Club. From North Myrtle Beach it is just a short 20-minute drive West on Route 9 from Route 17.

You know you are headed in the right direction when you pass what once was one of the premier golf courses on the strand, Bay Tree Golf club. This course was recently closed due to development. It is already is overgrown and shaggy and a testament to overdevelopment.

I only mention this because one of the main reasons we wanted to play Black Bear was because they recently reworked all of the greens. They closed for a few months and recently re-opened.

Carolina Shores, Calabash, NC - My name is Joe Derus and I play golf almost every Wednesday with a group of guys who live in the North Myrtle Beach area. We are a diverse group of guys, with handicaps from 8 to 36. Some are long hitters off the tee some are good with the short irons. Each week we’ll play and critique a course around the North Myrtle Beach area

Last Wednesday, we played Carolina Shores in Calabash NC. Calabash is the southern-most town in North Carolina. It’s about a one iron drive from North Myrtle Beach. From SC Route 17 North and follow signs to 179 to Calabash.

For wwwNorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com, we will be covering weekly a course somewhere around North Myrtle Beach providing the readers a “hacker’s” strategies for playing these courses.
