Television game show hostess and actress, Vanna White, returned recently to North Myrtle Beach for her annual two week vacation. She comes back twice a year, the second time in October when she gathers with her high school girl friends for catch-up time. Many come from long distances – one as far away as Hawaii.
While here, she and son, Nikko, and daughter, Gigi, will be relaxing, enjoying visiting with relatives and old North Myrtle Beach friends and making new friends.
In addition to visiting with Herbert White, her stepfather, Vanna and her children like to visit Peggy Hursey, her godmother. While at Peggy Hursey’s house she met a new friend, six month old Sean Stanley – a new favorite of Peggy’s and, now, of Vanna’s – and talked to NorthMyrtleBeachONLINE.com.
In the informal setting of Peggy Hursey’s home, NorthMyrtleBeachONLINE.com began a conversation with Vanna White and Peggy Hursey.
At the start of the conversation, Vanna asked that we help her clear up a misunderstanding. She said, “I do not own a house on Ocean Boulevard. That has been a rumor for years. The tour boats even point out the house as they cruise past. They call it Vanna White’s house but I have never owned it.”
Peggy joined in saying, “I understand it is owned by two attorneys.”
The gathering speculated that, perhaps, the owners are trying to falsely give it celebrity status to increase rentals.
Continuing, Vanna said, “I want to thank Chris Stanko for not bringing his famous brownies. Even though there is not a clause in my contract regarding weight, I still have to get into those beautiful gowns.”
Vanna said, “I come back here every season. It’s Nikko’s and Gigi’s favorite place to go. Before the kids were born, I would
return for six weeks, but now with both of them in school and very much involved in activities at home, we just cannot spend as much summer time here as in the past.”
“Nikko is very active in basketball, baseball and will be in football this year. He just got a drum set and is busy learning how to play. Gigi is a gymnast and dancer.”
“Before Nikko was born, I was into a lot of things in addition to Wheel of Fortune – the Home Shopping Network, commercials, promotional activities and jet charters. But the kids are my number one priority and I have scaled way back.”
“I do only the Wheel of Fortune. It tapes 4 days a month; 5 or more shows a day, which, even along with preparation time, gives me time with my kids doing the normal mom things. Things like taking them back and forth to their activities and, of course, helping with the homework.”
Peggy explained how she became Vanna’s godmother. “Joan, Vanna’s mother, worked with me at Jordan Realty. We were the best of friends. In 1980, Joan was dying of ovarian cancer. Vanna and I were in the hospital with Joan, when she took my hand and placed Vanna’s hand into mine. Joan placed her hand on top of mine and said this is your daughter and I expect you to help raise her.”
Vanna said, “I’ve known Peggy all my life. Whenever I was young and saw her, she would give me a snickers bar. She was always there for me. I was 23 years old when my mother passed away. Peggy became my second mother. She taught me to always be the same person I was growing up here. Many people in Hollywood find it easy to forget who they really are. Peggy always kept me grounded – always reminded me of whom I really am – where my roots are. That is one of the reasons I come back every year – to remind myself.”
Nikko chimed in saying, “Peggy is the greatest!” Quickly, Gigi added, “She is like our grandmother!”
